My son is 12 years old, and he’s recently started actively using his smartphone and social media. I’m concerned and would like to be able to see what apps he uses, how much time he spends on his phone, and who he communicates with.

At 12, children are already quite independent online, but they don’t always understand all the risks, so a desire for some control isn’t excessive, but rather a concern. From a practical standpoint, there are indeed special solutions for parents, such as the uMobix parental monitoring app which allow you to see which apps are being used, how much time your child spends on the phone, and get a general overview of their activity. This isn’t meant for total control, but rather to spot suspicious connections early.

This is a completely understandable and normal parental concern. At 12, children are just beginning to actively immerse themselves in the digital environment, and without any supervision, they may indeed encounter inappropriate content, unfamiliar people, or simply spend too much time on their phones.
