Our company has sent employees abroad before, but most of our attention has always gone into getting them there: visas, flights, accommodation and the initial paperwork. We’ve recently realised that the more difficult part often starts after the employee arrives, especially when they have to figure out local systems while also settling into a completely different work environment.

One of my former coworkers accepted an international assignment and expected the main challenge to be adapting to a new office. In reality, housing, family logistics, cultural differences, and communication with the home team affected the experience just as much as the job itself. I read https://www.educba.com/expatriate-management/ later and it described many of those issues clearly. Watching his experience convinced me that companies need a proper support plan before sending someone abroad, not just a contract and relocation allowance.
