We’re seriously considering implementing a product information management system. Our product range has exploded in the last couple of years, and keeping all the data straight is becoming almost impossible. Has anyone gone through the process recently? I’m particularly interested in any advice about what to do *before* you start evaluating different PIM systems. Did you focus on cleaning up existing data first? Or mapping out all your current workflows? Any lessons learned would be greatly appreciated! It all feels a bit overwhelming right now.

I can definitely share some insights from our experience! Before diving into PIM software demos, the absolute best thing you can do is a thorough internal audit. Really understanding where your product data lives, who owns it, and how it flows through your organization makes a world of difference. This article on leading PIM software in 2025 https://wavetechglobal.com/leading-7-product-information-management-pim-software-in-2025/ is also a helpful overview. Also, document all your data requirements. That way, you’ll be able to assess potential solutions more effectively. Defining your must-haves upfront will prevent you from getting swayed by flashy features you don’t really need.

Often, people underestimate the initial data cleansing effort. It’s not just about having the right software, it’s about having accurate and consistent data to begin with. Without that foundation, even the best PIM system won’t deliver the expected results. Different departments almost always have different ways of describing the same product, and those differences need to be reconciled before anything else happens. That’s a massive undertaking in itself for larger organizations.
