So my mom answered a random call yesterday and the guy claimed to be from her bank. She almost believed him until I stepped in. That really shook me. I want to prevent this in the future. What’s the best way to protect yourself from unknown callers and spam numbers?

That’s honestly scary, something similar happened with my uncle. He got a call “from the bank” about suspicious activity and they pushed him to act fast, classic trick. Luckily he mentioned it to me before doing anything. Since then we agreed he never shares info over calls and always hangs up to contact the bank directly. I also showed him how to quickly check unknown numbers through GEOfinder just to get a clue if something feels off. It doesn’t solve everything, but it really helps stay calm and not fall for pressure.

This is such a good reminder, thank you for sharing — seriously. The “act fast” pressure is exactly what makes these scams work, it bypasses common sense completely. Your uncle is lucky he paused and asked first.
The tip about hanging up and calling the bank back directly is something more people should just have as a reflex. And the number lookup idea is underrated — having even a small piece of context before reacting can slow everything down in the best way. Saving this thread for my mom, who I’m pretty sure would panic-click anything that said “urgent account issue.” Really appreciate you laying this out so clearly.
